Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty?

It is a plastic surgery procedure that reshapes the nasal structure, including both the cartilaginous and bony parts.

Who is this indicated for?

This procedure is indicated for people who wish to improve the aesthetics of their nose, but it can also be performed as a treatment for functional issues. These problems may include a deviated septum and hypertrophy of the turbinates.

It is also recommended for people who have experienced trauma that has altered the shape of the nose.

Rhinoplasty should only be performed when all the structures of the nose have fully developed. In women, this is typically around the age of 15, and in men, around the age of 17.

What is the surgery/procedure like?

The patient should undergo a clinical examination with the responsible doctor to assess the condition of the nasal septum and turbinates.

In the 10 days preceding the rhinoplasty, the patient should avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, or substances containing salicylic acid. In the 4 days leading up to the surgery, alcoholic beverages should not be consumed. Prior to the surgery, the patient should fast for 8 hours, refraining from consuming any food or beverages.

The surgery is performed in a hospital setting and can be done under general or local anesthesia. Following this, an incision is made on the external or internal part of the nose, allowing the skin to be lifted and providing access to the cartilaginous structure of the nose. The surgeon corrects any necessary issues, involving procedures such as shaving, cutting, repositioning, grafting, and bone manipulation. Finally, the skin is placed back into position and sutures are used to ensure it remains in the proper place. A dressing is applied, and usually, the patient can return home on the same day.

The procedure typically takes around 3 hours.

The patient is discharged within a period of 12 to 24 hours.

Benefits of the procedure

In terms of aesthetics, this surgery corrects imperfections and creates a more harmonious appearance for the nose and face. It also helps to address breathing problems, such as deviated septum and turbinate hypertrophy, allowing the patient to breathe better.

The patient may experience swelling, bruising and difficulty breathing for a few days. Within 3 days, the condition tends to improve. It is important to follow medical recommendations and avoid any physical exertion in the first week after surgery. Sun exposure should also be avoided as it can worsen swelling. Physical activities can be resumed after approximately 30 days.
